Joy
Kirkwood, B.Sc., PT, CHT, RCAMT, MCPA
Joy received her physiotherapy degree from the University of Toronto
in 1987. After working and traveling for several years, she started
her post-graduate work in Orthopedics. In 1993 she successfully
challenged the Canadian Orthopedic Part A Manual Therapy Exam and
is a resident of the Canadian Academy of Manual/Manipulative Therapists
(RCAMT). She started her hand therapy focus in 1996 when she opened
a hand therapy practice in her home. In 1999 she obtained her Certified
Hand Therapist designation and since this time has treated hand
injuries exclusively.
She has been
the vice president of the Canadian Society of Hand Therapists and
the chair of marketing and promotions and executive program committee
member for the 4th congress of the International Federation of the
Societies for Hand Therapy.
She is a level
1 member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, Sports Therapy
Division. She is very active in volunteer sports and has covered
numerous BC summer and winter games, the Canada Games, the Commonwealth
Games and the World Figure Skating Championships in Vancouver.
Joy is currently
enjoying the pleasures of motherhood and is on an extended maternity
leave.

Trevor Fraser, B.Sc.,
PT, RCAMT, CHT, MCPA
Trevor
graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the
University of Western Ontario in 1996. Postgraduate education includes
a certificate in Intermediate Manual Therapy (Part A) and his Hand
Therapy Certification (CHT). Trevor's caseload is primarily hand and
upper extremity clients.
With over 10 years of experience, Trevor also provides
UBC students and new hand therapists mentorship opportunities at
the clinic. Dedicated to promoting the profession, Trevor frequently
lectures to various healthcare groups on the benefits and practice
of Hand Therapy in British Columbia.
Trevor volunteers physiotherapy services for a number
of sporting events including: the Vancouver Sun Run, the Price Waterhouse
Marathon and the 2001 World Figure Skating Championship in Vancouver.
He is also the former president of the West Coast Hand Therapy Association
(WCHTA).
In his spare time, Trevor enjoys weight training
and hitting the slopes on his snowboard. Trevor is also an avid
volleyball player and volunteers his time as the Chair of a local
volleyball organization.

Michelle
Labandelo, B.Sc., BRSc (PT)
Michelle graduated from the UBC School of
Rehabilitation Sciences in 2002 and joined the clinic in 2003. She
continues to work part-time for the Fraser Health Authority. Previous
work experiences included acute/critical care at Royal Columbian
Hospital and subacute rehabilitation at St. Mary's Hospital.
Her particular
areas of interest are hand therapy, neurorehabilitation, geriatric
medicine and arthritis management. Michelle hopes to take the American
Society of Hand Therapy Exam within the next few years in order
to realize her career objective of becoming a Certified Hand Therapist.
Outside of the clinic setting, Michelle enjoys traveling and volunteering
with the Burnaby branch of the BC Special Olympics.

Nikki
Tait, B.Sc., PT, MCPA
Nikki graduated with a B.Sc. in Physiotherapy from Manchester
University in England in 1988. She has participated in numerous post-graduate
physiotherapy courses. Her areas of expertise include musculoskeletal
injuries and orthopaedics.
She
is interested in outdoor activities including walking, hiking and
mountain biking. She also enjoys helping at her children’s
school.

Peter Sharpe, B.Sc., PT, CHT

Having come from a Sports Science background, Peter trained as a Chartered Physiotherapist in London and obtained his BSc in 1994.
He has specialised in Hand Therapy since 2000 and became an Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Hand Specialist in 2003 at the principal hospital in Bath, England. He is a Certified Hand Therapist and moved to Vancouver from England in April 2008 with his young family. He enjoys cycling, music and mountains and looks forward to exploring Beautiful British Columbia!

Megan
Perry, B.Sc., OT, CHT
Megan graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational
Therapy from the University of British Columbia in 1987. She began
her career working with clients with neurological deficits and was
an assistant in the School of Rehabilitation Medicine’s Neuroanatomy
course for 2 years. Megan then specialized in hand therapy in 1994.
She was the Senior Occupational Therapist in Orthopaedics at Lions
Gate Hospital from 1995 to 2001. Megan completed her certification
in Hand Therapy in 1996 and has re-certified in 2001 and 2006.
Her special
interest in the fabrication of custom hand splints, including those
made of low temperature thermoplastic, fabric and leather.

Diana
Matthews, B.H.Sc., OT, CHT

Diana graduated with a B.Sc. in Occupational Therapy from
McMaster University in 1993. She completed her hand therapy certification
in 1999. She is the current president elect for the West Coast Hand
Therapy Association. Her areas of expertise include treatment of the
problematic wrist and wound care.
Diana
enjoys outdoor recreation such as hiking, biking and kayaking. She
also has an interest in traveling locally and internationally.

Joanne
Smith,
B.Sc., OT, CHT
Joanne graduated with a B.Sc. in Occupational Therapy from
the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa in 1982. She immigrated
to Vancouver in 1986 and has treated burn and hand injuries ever
since then. She completed her Hand Therapy Certification in 1991
and attends courses annually to upgrade her skills. Her greatest
expertise and professional passion is to fabricate splints. She
also teaches other professionals and studies the art and science
of creating custom splints.
Joanne is married
and has 15 and 17 year old daughters. She enjoys running, listening
to classical music and doing home exchanges in other countries.

Shaveen (Shane) S. Kullar, B.Sc., MPT.
Shaveen obtained
a B.Sc., in Biochemistry and Microbiology from the University of
Victoria in 2003 and then went on to obtain a. Masters degree in
Physical Therapy from the University of Western Ontario. He has
completed the McKenzie Assessment and Treatment of Lower Back Specialty.
He also has his acupuncture certification with the Acupuncture Foundation
of Canada Institute and uses anatomical acupuncture to assist in
his physical therapy practice. In practice Shaveen focuses on manual
therapy, exercise therapy, and pain control and has a special interest
in the treatment of acute and chronic pain conditions. Shaveen also
has a keen interest in sports rehab and sports specific training.
Shaveen likes
to keep himself busy by playing basketball and training in martial
arts.

Jessa Eng, M.Sc.P.T., B.Sc.Kin., M.C.P.A.
Jessa graduated from Queens University with a Masters of Physical Therapy in 2007. She has also completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Kinesiology Co-op in 2005. She has a large background in the health and fitness field having worked as a fitness programmer and trainer in several fitness clubs and recreation centers within the lower mainland. She has a keen interest in manual therapy, sports rehab and core stabilization.
Jessa believes in an active approach to rehab and enjoys a number of activities including running, biking, hiking, snowboarding, surfing, yoga, basketball, ultimate frisbee as well as weight training.

Monica Gil
I am currently attending Simon Fraser University to finish up my Kinesiology degree. I have been given the wonderful opportunity to complete my practicum at Coquitlam Physiotherapy and Hand Therapy Center working with a wonderful team of therapists and patients. I love my job because I get the chance to meet new people and learn something new everyday. When I am not knee-deep in books or at the Clinic, I enjoy working out at my kickboxing gym, organizing bootcamp classes for girlfriends of mine, concerts, watching sports and traveling. I have an ambition to better those around me to the best of my ability as well as to learn as much as I can from those I meet. I am fluent in both English and Portuguese and hope to add other languages to that list someday.

Cindy Gilray
Cindy graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 2000. She has completed her level 2 Orthopaedic courses in manual therapy and is in the process of completing her level 3. She also has completed her Acupuncture certification through the Acupuncture foundation of Canada.
With having 2 young children herself Cindy had a desire to work in Paediatrics and worked for a Child Development Centre as a Community Paediatric Physiotherapist. She treated infants and children with a variety of Developmental and Orthopaedic conditions including developmental and gross motor delay, cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, and a variety of other syndromes. She believes in family-centered, goal-orientated care, and continues to take continuing education in this area as well.
When Cindy is not working she enjoys spending time with her family and their involvement in many school and church activities.

Taylor
Taylor graduated with her Bachelor of Kinesiology Degree from Acadia University in Nova Scotia in May 2008. Since then, she became a Registered Kinesiologist through the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists. In practice Taylor works to develop active rehabilitation programs for patients looking to strengthen and condition for their specific injuries and overall fitness. Taylor plays recreational soccer and enjoys trail running, hiking.

Amanda
Amanda graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy in 2000. Amanda's passion for hand therapy began in OT school when she had several internships in hand rehabilitation. This passion led her to relocate to Bellingham, WA for several years to further her training in this area. Amanda hopes to obtain her CHT certification in 2009. Her dream is to travel to regularly to Africa to develop programs aimed at training African clinicians in the practice of hand therapy.
In her leisure time, Amanda enjoys teaching and practicing yoga, watching international films, traveling to remote areas of the world, and spending time with her goldendoodle, Penelope.
