Active
Rehab
At
the Guildford and Coquiltam Physiotherapy Clinics,
we offer an active rehabilitation program for people who are attempting
to return to normal function. Active rehabilitation
means that the individual takes an active role in their recovery.
Under the guidance of a Physiotherapist and Kinesiologist, the
participants learn to manage their injuries independently and
achieve an optimal level of independence. The Physiotherapist
and Kinesiologist work together to provide a comprehensive rehabilitation
protocol providing pain management, education, conditioning, and
therapeutic exercises.
The
Active Rehabilitation Program is tailored to meet the
needs and physical abilities of the participant. Every participant
receives one-on-one attention from the Kinesiologist and Physiotherapist.
This unique approach allows us to provide the best possible
treatment for each participant.
Exercise:
The exercise programs are individually tailored, taking into account
the individuals injury, functional limitations, level of conditioning
and the requirements of their job and daily living needs. The
exercise programs typically include flexibility, strengthening,
core stability work, swedish ball exercises, cardiovascular, postural,
work simulation, and educational components. Exercises
are progressed throughout the duration of the program
until a full gym exercise program, including work-specific-tasks,
has been established.
Education:
Education is an important aspect of recovery and
is stressed throughout the program. The following topics are typically
addresses:
Functional
Activities: Work specific conditioning is incorporated
into every exercise program. Functional activities are designed
to improve a person’s body mechanics during movements they
encounter in everyday life. Often functional activities can closely
mimic a person’s job demand, thus helping to prepare the
individual for a return to work.
Functional
Capacity Evaluation (FCE): A Functional Capacity
Evaluation is useful when it is necessary to compare the physical
abilities of a worker to the demands of a specific job. Information
obtained during an FCE can be used to determine the potential
for an individual to return to work, identify specific work tasks
that are a barrier to return to work, and identify performance
consistency and reliability. Job site visits may also be incorporated
into an evaluation or treatment plan in order to assist in determining
a safe and durable return to work.
Return
To Work Program:
At our clinic, a successful recovery not only includes a return
to one’s pre-accident lifestyle, but also consists of a
durable, safe and effective return to work plan. Working together,
the Physiotherapist and Kinesiologist, develop a suitable return
to work plan based on an individuals job demands. Modified work
duties along with a graduated return to work schedule are only
a few examples of how our clinic is able assist in successful
return to work.
Hydrotherapy
Program: Clients who are not candidates for an
active rehabilitation program may prefer a hydrotherapy or pool
program. Water based exercises are individually designed with
a Physiotherapist and Kinesiologist to help improve range of motion
while providing subtle strengthening exercises. The client is
monitored directly under the supervision of a Kinesiologist in
the pool who can also provide assistance when necessary. Once
a client has mastered these exercises they graduate to a land
based program. Group programs are also available.
